Tilda Swinton 'labour is murderous'
Tilda Swinton has claimed that films make women feel inadequate by presenting a romanticised portrayal of childbirth.
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, the 50-year-old mother of twins said that the reality of labour is "murderous" and "violent".
According to the Daily Mail, Swinton said: "In the movies where people have babies and particularly [in] television films, they are sitting in a hospital bed with flowers everywhere, beautifully made up, they have a baby in their arms and it is all very lovely.
"Anyone who has been in that zone will know it's a total fiction. It's a truly, truly murderous business.
"Giving birth is a violent [thing to go through]. It is a bloody business having a family."
Swinton added that many women do not feel an automatic bond to their offspring and find it hard to adapt.
The actress was at the Cannes Film Festival for the launch of her new film We Need To Talk About Kevin, adapted from Lionel Shriver's popular novel.
